Online Marketing Blog: Search Marketing Blogs by RSS Subscribers

  • Al Carlton · 2 years ago
Thanks for the link and extra entries Lee. I'm not that up on SE blogs so can I ask do you have any idea why John Battelle’s subscriber count is so much higher than all the other entries. Thanks.
  • Lee Odden · 2 years ago
Hi Al, you bet. Putting that list together was a great idea.

John Battelle has such a large subscriber count because he's the co-founder of Wired Magazine, has written a very popular book on Search Engines, is founder of Federated Media and many other accomplishments. He has a huge following as an authority on the search engine industry.
  • Andy Beal · 2 years ago
    Great new angle Lee.

Here's another angle. I'd do it myself, but I don't have time. Divide the blogs up by the color they use for the feedcount badge, then average out the numbers to see which color has the most readers. ;-)
  • Cristian Mezei · 2 years ago
LOL Andy .. Weird way of looking at things :P
  • Lee Odden · 2 years ago
Ah yes, so many ideas and so little time. :)
  • Marek · 2 years ago
Andy, I like the format in which you presented this list. Really cool. I featured your Search Marketing Blogs on my home page today.

    Well done. - Marek

Amazing to see so many subscribers, but I would rather see a chart of subscribers over time. I show counts on my little competitive webmastering blog, and it changes 10% on a daily basis. I bet it would be easy to separate those who seek out subscribers from those who build a subscriber base over time. Of course assuming there is no gaming of this new "success metric" ;-)
  • Eric · 2 years ago
Great list to see here! How much do you think features in the Wired Magazine has helped promote readership to his blog? My guess is this equals about 45% of his RSS Subscriptions. Any other thoughts?
  • Lee Odden · 2 years ago
Hey John, anyone who's publishing is seeking subscribers. Danny Sullivan has nearly 10,000 RSS subscribers in a few months. There's no doubt he was both seeking out subscribers and building a subscriber base over time. These are not mutually exclusive, if that's what you mean.
  • Lee Odden · 2 years ago
Eric, I don't think Wired factors into John Battelle's RSS numbers much other than the fact he's well known. His book, industry coverage and involvement with Web 2.0 conferences have all contributed to this as well. ie, offline notoriety certainly affects online attention.
  • Matt McGee · 2 years ago
Hey Lee -- add another 10-20 blogs to this list when you get a chance, eh? :-) I'm at about 900 subscribers, and shocked by it.......
  • Lee Odden · 2 years ago
Hi Matt, I just need the FeedBurner account id and I'll add them.
  • Matt McGee · 2 years ago
Hi Lee -- I see you found that ID number for me. Thanks so much. Can you tell me how/where you found it?? :-) I might need it for future reference!!
  • randfish · 2 years ago
Lee - crap... We have about 12,000+ feed readers, but Feedburner only shows numbers from that morning, and our server was down, so less than half of the usual. :( Stupid Server!
  • Balazs Balint · 2 years ago
Thank you for publishing this great list. I had a look at some of theese blogs, and found that "offline" presence is just as important for success as online activity- if you want to have subscribers.
  • Victor Roestad provides the Fr · 2 years ago
Thank you so much for providing us
with this list of great feeds, Lee :-)

I'll be happy to read many of them
    and learn more about marketing.

I love studying this and one can
    allways learn something new, even
    experts ;-)

    Warmest regards,

    Victor Roestad

I decided to turn them on. I have two feeds, so I turned on both and listed them at http://www.seroundtable.com/subscribe.html#feed

The numbers, as Rand explained, goes up and down based on the day and time of the day.
  • Lee Odden · 2 years ago
Hi Rand, I was thinking there was something odd with the low numbers reported for your feed. I have reordered the RSS chicklet above accordingly.
  • Lee Odden · 2 years ago
Hi Barry, Thanks for that link. A RSS chicklet representing your feeds have been added to the list above.
  • Barry Schwartz · 2 years ago
    They have?
  • Cristian Mezei · 2 years ago
SeoMOZ should be moved higher :)
  • Lee Odden · 2 years ago
Hold on guys :) Updates are live now.

Also, Barry I decided only to post one of your feed counts since it is overwhelmingly more than the other and no one else has two feeds posted.
  • Barry Schwartz · 2 years ago
    fine with me... thanks.
  • Andy Beal · 2 years ago
You have to love us marketers. We hate to be left out. You should have seen the original list by Self Made Minds, even Steve Rubel commented that he was left out.

Any link bait that taps into the pride of a marketer is going to work every time! I know I'm now gunning to pass Lee. ;-)
  • Greg Jarboe · 2 years ago
Great list, Lee. And an enterprising story. As I see from all the comments posted here, we are all hooked on metrics.
  • David Dalka · 2 years ago
if only clickthrough rates were known....
  • Matt Cutts · 2 years ago
Cool idea, Lee. I added my stats to the pile:
    http://www.mattcutts.com/blog/my-feedburner-fee...
  • Greg Jarboe · 2 years ago
Matt, it is so cool that you've contributed your stats. And Lee, hats off again for starting this trends. By the way, if you use the Blog Juice Calculator over at Text Link Ads, you can get data on the number of Bloglines subscribers for all of these blogs. For example, Matt Cutts has 3,810 Bloglines subscribers.
  • Navneet · 2 years ago
    Hey Lee,

These numbers turned me on...errrrr I mean made me turn my blog feedcount on!

Well are just few thousands behind John Battelle!
  • Merlin Silk · 2 years ago
You know, when, in a race, you don't know where you are, it's disconcerting. But now, with this data, I just know how much I have to do to catch up ;-)
    Thanks, Lee!
  • Brad · 2 years ago
Really interesting and useful collection of Top seo blogs I was looking for to be remain updated with what is going on in the industry and to gain some inspiration as well.
  • Fargham · 2 years ago
I good job done, Nice to see Matt on # 2.
  • Brian Clark · 2 years ago
So I guess you decided that ProBlogger and Copyblogger are not search blogs after all. ;)
  • Lee Odden · 2 years ago
Yeah, that was a bit of a liberal interpretation on my part because I like yours and Darren's blogs so much.
  • Manoj · 2 years ago
Alright Lee - Although I don't strictly discuss SEO, I think I am ready to be considered for your list :) http://manojjasra.blogspot.com
  • DazzlinDonna · 2 years ago
Hey, Lee, mind adding SEO Scoop to the list? (feedburner id is seoscoop i think). I know it'll end up being near the bottom of the list, as it doesn't come close to competing with the big boys, but what the heck...i'll call it incentive. :)
  • Lee Odden · 2 years ago
Hey Donna, I will try doing that now.
  • Glen Allsopp ~ Social Media · 2 years ago
Hi Lee, these actually don't change location though do they, as the bottom one's the numbers are in the wrong order.
  • Lee Odden · 2 years ago
Nice to meet you "Glen Allsopp Social Media". Heh. See blog comment policy please. :)

The numbers change but placement is not dynamic. Not yet at least. If someone has written up some code to do that, I'd be happy to incorporate it.
  • Cristian Mezei · 2 years ago
I think you can do it by accessing the FeedBurner API. But just for this simple top, it's not worth your time Lee.

And it's changing by the day.
  • Glen Allsopp · 2 years ago
My apologies I have in-form enter and I had set my name like that by accident, I emailed a few people to see if they would change it because I hadn't noticed it was on the name

    Cheers,
    Glen
  • Google Tutor · 2 years ago
    Hey Lee,

Nice list, I just stumbled on it literally...and noticed a glaring red hole ;)
  • Lee Odden · 2 years ago
Google Tutor, your blog isn't a SEO blog. And therefore doesn't apply to this list.
  • Google Tutor · 2 years ago
    yeah, yeah... :)
  • Dave Curtis · 2 years ago
Danny Sullivan: Dan, it is not important that you respond to this message, but I was reading online marketing blog, and search engine land was number five on the numbers count. I wonder how many people realize that you no longer work at search engine land? The only reason I read at that web site, was because of you and your excellent knowledge. I was more than happy to switch and follow you here. You are doing excellent here already in this short amount of time. You also have a great kick butt staff that I enjoy. This is still the number one spot in our book for learning. Sincerely, Dave Curtis.
  • Danny Sullivan · 1 year ago
Dave, I only just saw this. I think you meant that I'm no longer at Search Engine Watch -- Search Engine Land is where I went when I left there. And thanks for your kind words. I do occasionally get people who still think I'm at the old place. I guess it's kind of hard when I was there for so long and still have so many articles there.
  • Lee Odden · 1 year ago
Danny, you defined Search Engine Watch and there will always be a connection between your name and the good things you worked so hard to create there.
  • ersin · 1 year ago
thank you very much for this great list.
I couldn't find a list like this anywhere. thx.
  • Wilson · 1 year ago
Yeah, great list. Very helpfull. Thank you very much.
  • Lee Odden · 1 year ago
Wilson, your SEO and webmaster list is grossly incomplete.
  • Wilson · 1 year ago
You´re right. Thanks for your advice. I´ll add some more. In fact I was waiting for visitors to make suggestions ...
  • PR Project · 1 year ago
This list is great, WE subscribed to every feed on this list. Thanks!
  • Goran Web · 1 year ago
I have already subscribed to most of these. I have never heard of John Battelle and he is so far ahead of the others, the only one in the 100k+. Will check out the others, thanks for the heads-up, great list.
  • Peter · 1 year ago
Nice list,it is so cool that you
  • Peter Caputa · 11 months ago
    Very cool list, Lee.

One of your commenters asked about readership via time. This is something we track very closely at HubSpot. We also track inbound links over time. We're happy to share the graphs if you think people would be interested in it. There's a really interesting inflection point where the pace of new inbound links really takes off at a much higher rate.
  • David Howell · 2 months ago
    Like the list pretty cool
